Brown Sugar - Let’s keep it soft!

Brown sugar is one of those ingredients that can cause frustration in your kitchen if you don't store it correctly.

It gets hard and can clump very easily when exposed to the air.

Fear not, I have a few tips to help keep it clump free!

Here are a few tips to keep it fresh:

  1. Make sure to transfer your brown sugar from the bag into an airtight container once you open it. You can use pretty much any type of container as long as it has an airtight lid.

  2. You can purchase a brown sugar softener which is made out of terra cotta to place in the container. These can be found at most stores or Amazon as well. A popular one is called a Brown Sugar Bear. These discs help release moisture into the sugar to keep it soft.

  3. For fixing brown sugar that is hard or clumped, you could place a marshmallow or slice of white bread on top of the sugar overnight before sealing the container. It should soften up and be ready for you to use the next day. Make sure to remove and discard the bread/marshmallow when the sugar is soft to avoid mold formation.

  4. If you are in a pinch and need your sugar asap but it is clumped and hard, you can place a damp paper towel over the clumps and microwave for 20-30 seconds.

    Now go get baking!
