Make Buttermilk in a Pinch

Let me preface this post by saying that you will absolutely get the best results in your recipes (baking or otherwise) by using actual buttermilk. It adds a moisture and flavor that is hard to achieve otherwise.

But, in a pinch if you need just a bit, or the store is totally out, you can make your own! Most recipes should still work with this substitute, but you may not get the same results as the recipe creator that used the actual stuff.

I have used this buttermilk hack many times in baking and I have not been upset with the outcome.

Recipe for Buttermilk in a Pinch:

Ingredients Needed:

1 cup of milk

1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Servings Made: 1 cup

Time to Make: 10 minutes

How to:

Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. Stir and let sit for about 10 minutes. Stir again and use as per your recipe directions.
