On top of vanilla cakes or cupcakes
Filling for dessert bars
Ice cream sundae topping
Apple crumble filling
On it’s own with a spoon (and some ice cream!)
Recipe for Apple Pie Filling:
Ingredients Needed:
4 granny smith apples peeled, cored and cut into thin slices
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon all spice
You can sub all three of the above spices with about 1 ½ teaspoons of store bought apple pie spice blend
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons butter (salted)
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon corn starch mixed in 2 tablespoons water
Options for serving - puff pastry sheets, tart shells, pie crust etc.
Servings made: Makes about 2 cups filling
Time to Prep: 10 minutes
Time to Cook: 10-15 minutes
How to make:
Peel, core and slice apples into very thin sections. Place into a large bowl and add lemon juice to coat apples.
In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter and add water, sugar and spices. Mix well and add apples when butter is melted.
Cook covered for about 5-7 minutes until the apples begin to soften up. Slowly add corn starch and water mixture and stir well. Turn heat down to low and allow to simmer for another 1-3 minutes depending on how soft you want the apples. The corn starch will help to thicken the liquid.
Turn heat off and use as desired. You can store in an air tight container in fridge once cool for 2-3 days or in the freezer for up to three months.
Enjoy!
