Mishkaki - Grilled Beef Cubes

These cubes of beef are marinated overnight with an incredibly flavorful mix of seasonings and spices. Make a double batch of these for your family/guests as they will disappear fast!

I love having these with some masala potatoes, corn, naan and a healthy dose of chutney.

The key to these is to make sure you marinate them overnight to get the flavors into the beef cubes really well.

I love using top sirloin for this recipe as it is so tender and juicy! If you can, throw in some mashed kiwi to help soften the beef up.

Pro tip - Don’t add the kiwi into the marinade overnight or your beef will feel mushy when eating. You want to add the kiwi into your marinating beef about 4-6 hours prior to grilling but no earlier.

Bonus pro tip - Don’t forget to soak your skewers if you are using wooden ones for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling so they don’t burn on the grill!

Recipe for Mishkaki:

Ingredients needed:

2 lbs beef cut into 1-2 inch cubes

Marinade:

3 tablespoons oil

1 handful fresh cilantro chopped

1-2 green chilis (Serrano or similar)

Salt to taste (you can sub this with citric acid if you prefer a tart taste)

1/2 tablespoon ginger paste

1/2 tablespoon garlic paste

2 tablespoons water

2 tablespoons white vinegar

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 teaspoons tandoori powder

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon cumin (ground or seeds is fine)

Optional – 1/4-1/2 ripe kiwi mashed

Servings made: 4-6 people

Time to Prep: 15-20 minutes

Time to marinate: 6-8 hours or overnight

Time to Cook: 5-10 minutes depending on desired level of doneness and thickness of cubes made.

How to make:

Add all ingredients for marinade except kiwi into a blender and blend for about 1-2 minutes until well mixed. Pour marinade over beef cubes and mix well until all pieces coated well. Store in fridge covered, overnight or for at least 6-8 hours. Mash kiwi and add to beef and marinade no earlier than 4-6 hours before cooking.

Prior to grilling, skewer cubes onto metal or wooden skewers. If using wooden skewers, make sure to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to ensure they don't burn when grilling. Grill beef to desired level of doneness (you can check with a meat thermometer).

Enjoy!
