Mocha Buttercream Frosting
I love frosting my chocolate cupcakes and cakes with this mocha buttercream. I love that it isn’t too sweet but has that delicious hint of coffee flavor.
Nothing fancy about this frosting but it will have people thinking you spent hours making it!
Try using this frosting in between two cookies for mocha stuffed cookies!
Recipe for Mocha Buttercream Frosting:
Ingredients Needed:
1 cup unsalted butter softened (room temperature)
3 cups of powdered sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons instant coffee powder
1 tablespoon hot water
1-2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
Servings Made: About 2 ½ cups of frosting which should be enough to frost 24 cupcakes iced flat, 15-18 cupcakes iced swirled, or a two layer 8 inch cake.
Time to Prep: 5 minutes
Time to Make: 10 minutes
How to Make:
Using an electric mixer, beat butter and for 2-3 minutes. Add cocoa powder.
Pro tip - Sift in powdered sugar and cocoa powder making sure no lumps of sugar or cocoa enter mixture. (This helps to make your buttercream smooth).
Mix for 1-2 minutes with mixer and then add salt and vanilla. Mix until combined. Set aside.
In a small bowl or cup, add hot water to instant coffee powder and stir until coffee is dissolved. Let mixture cool down and strain with a small sieve to ensure no lumps present. Discard any lumps. Pour the coffee liquid into buttercream and mix on low with mixer. Slowly add 1-2 tablespoons of heavy cream and mix on medium speed until well mixed and your desired consistency.
Pro tip - you could absolutely use decaf instant coffee powder if you don’t want any caffeine in your frosting.
Enjoy!
